About KnownAquarium and the Standards Behind Our Guides
KnownAquarium is an independent aquarium reference built around one practical question: can an animal live well in the water, space, social group, and care routine available to it?
Why does aquarium care need a system view?
A fish can be correctly identified and still be placed in the wrong aquarium. Adult size, group size, oxygen, filtration, swimming room, feeding access, and the pace of water changes all affect the same animal.
KnownAquarium connects those conditions so a purchase or care decision is based on the whole aquarium. One attractive trait or one acceptable test result cannot cancel a serious mismatch elsewhere.

What aquarium subjects are covered?
Animal and plant information includes freshwater fish, marine fish, invertebrates, corals and anemones, and aquatic plants. The same welfare standard applies whether the organism is common, inexpensive, rare, or visually striking.
System subjects include tank setup, water chemistry, cycling, filtration, maintenance, feeding, compatibility, and troubleshooting. These connections matter because a stocking choice changes waste production, oxygen demand, food competition, and the room left for every existing animal.
What standards guide a recommendation?
Survival in a shop tank is not proof of suitable lifetime housing. A recommendation considers the animal at adult size and includes the full social group, its normal behaviour, oxygen demand, waste production, and ability to rest or withdraw.
Water values also need context. A broad recorded range does not make every point inside it a target, and a stable value near one edge may be safer than a rapid correction toward the middle.
Where are the safety boundaries?
| Question | Boundary |
|---|---|
| Sick or injured animals | General information cannot replace examination by an aquatic veterinarian. |
| Medication | No diagnosis or dose is provided from a photograph or short description. |
| Livestock and sellers | KnownAquarium does not sell animals or rank breeders and shipments. |
| Wild collection | Protected or sensitive animals are never treated as collecting opportunities. |
| Product claims | Manufacturer instructions can describe that product, but cannot establish a general husbandry fact. |
The aquarium care disclaimer gives the full boundary for urgent and professional care.
How can you report a factual error?
Send the full address, exact statement or image, and a reliable source to [email protected] when one is available. Animal-welfare and safety concerns receive priority.
How is KnownAquarium funded?
KnownAquarium currently accepts no sponsored articles, gifted products, or affiliate commission. If that changes, any relationship capable of affecting a recommendation will be disclosed where the reader makes the decision.
The editorial policy covers independence and corrections, while the evidence standards cover source authority, measurements, uncertainty, and safety boundaries.
